WIC is open to many incomes and families. If you or your children receive Medicaid, SNAP or TANF, you already meet the income eligibility guidelines for WIC and your application can be processed faster. Even if you do not receive these programs, you may still qualify for WIC by meeting the income guidelines for your household. Participating in other benefit programs does not affect the amount of WIC benefits you receive.

SNAP

Who This Helps:

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps people buy the food they need for good health. People also can buy garden seeds with SNAP benefits.

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), formerly called food stamps, is a government program that helps people buy the food they need for healthy lives. It is the largest program working to fight hunger in America. SNAP helps many people stretch their budgets because the money they would use on food can go towards other needs like medical bills, utilities, and rent.

  • People in eligible low-income households.
  • Most adults ages 18 to 52 with no children in their home can get SNAP for only three months in a three-year period. The benefit period might be longer if the person works at least 20 hours a week or is in a job or training program. Some adults might not have to work to get benefits, such as those who have a disability or are pregnant.
  • Households in which all members are either older adults (age 60 and older) or people with disabilities are eligible to participate in the Texas Simplified Application Project (TSAP), which makes the SNAP application process easier and provides three years of benefits at a time instead of six months.

Maximum Monthly Income Limits

The following chart gives a general idea of the amount of money (income) that most people or families can earn and still be in this program.

2 $ 2,712
3 $ 3,419
4 $ 4,125
5 $ 4,832

Most people ages 16 to 59 must follow work rules to get SNAP benefits. Work rules mean a person must look for a job or be in an approved work program. If the person has a job, they can’t quit without a good reason.

TANF

TANF provides cash payments to help families pay for food, clothing, housing and other essentials.

Who This Helps:

Families with children ages 18 and younger. Families who can get TANF cash help have little to no money or don’t have a way to get money. A family can be (1) parents and their children, or (2) relatives caring for related children.

The following is used to see if a family can get TANF:

  • The amount of money the family has.
  • The value of things the family is paying for or owns.
  • The amount the family pays for child care and child support.

Maximum Monthly Income Limits
